I’ve always been inspired by Jeff Harford, for his uncompromising approach to performance, turning it unto a situational moment that is the spirit of live performance , spontaneous and risk taking, as well as the sounds he produces and the mystery that is Jeff himself. I recall seeing him play at a dreary veterans center. There was a metal table , possibly with a small amp on it or a chair was involved. The screeching and grinding that his movements with them produced not just an unpredicatable array of noise but there was an element of danger of failure that also played into the whole scenario. I wish I could remember exactly what happened as I’ve thought about that performance many times but it morphs into different things in my head I’ve so mythologized it.
When I started listening to the New Noise Nomads record I felt like I was inside Jeffs head. It was a ride I wanted to take tunneling into a gorgeous surrounding.
Jeff is still as much a mystery to me but I thought I might as well ask him some questions, because why not? He was generous enough to respond.---Kim Gordon Los Angeles 2025
