Edition of 300. First vinyl release for experimental percussion pioneer and feminist icon. Member of John Cage’s legendary first percussion ensemble in the 1930s-40s, close associate of Lou Harrison, and longtime accompanist for Anna Halprin’s radical dance company. Composed in the mid-1950s for dancer AA Leath, this remarkable work was recently discovered in archives by Tom Welsh. Comprising three movements (Land Form, Air Tide, and Earth Play), it’s scored for recorder, drums, gongs, maracas using revolutionary techniques decades ahead of its time – including lowering and raising gongs into water while beating. Gracefully rendered by Chicago’s Third Coast Percussion in its first-ever recording. Pantone color vinyl with commissioned liner notes illuminating this groundbreaking composer’s life and legacy.
