Peace Makers in the Summer Time: William Scott and BJ Armour contains the musical work of two artists connected by music that conjures a new season of peace and presence.
For decades, William Scott has been painting his utopian visions of a Beautiful Peace coming to remade neighborhoods populated by people reborn and ferried back to this world on spacecraft called SFOs (Skyline Friendly Organization). These songs, like his visual work, call out towards a world to come. Almost as chants, as though he is casting a spell, they are a powerful sonic manifestation on this plane of another, in which people are healthy and a beautiful summer of peace reigns.
BJ Armour’s music spins together things that have been and things to come. Speculation and memory combine, rewriting and reapproaching a wide array of subjects, from the pop cultural to the personal, spiritual to mundane. Veering nimbly between grief and humor, his difficult past and his playful and mindful present, Armour is a time traveller accompanied by relatives and heroes from heaven bringing the salve of his music to his younger self.
The songs on this album were made in the Progressive Art Studios Creative Growth in Oakland CA, and Studio Route 29 in Frenchtown NJ with facilitator and collaborator Hop Peternell. William Scott and Hop Peternell sat down over the course of several sessions in 2022. Scott gave direction for the sound he wanted and in some cases suggested instrumental melodies. His vocal takes were improvised and nothing was written down beforehand. Armour and Peternell currently work together in a similar process, with Armour setting the mood and scene by answering questions like: Is this song fast? Slow? Sharp? Plucky? Wooden? Angry? Sad? Excited? A pump-up? Armour’s vocal takes are also improvised without written lyrics, though his process involves further layering and arranging.
